    A Kitty Harper Film

    Writer · Director · Composer

Kitty Harper doesn't make films about other people's problems. She makes films about things that have happened — to people she knows, to people she loves.

Self Scan is based on a real experience. A real friend. A real assault that was prosecuted, but not convicted. Kitty watched that injustice and refused to let it stay silent.

An award-winning filmmaker, playwright, screenwriter and composer from Birmingham, Kitty has spent a decade crafting stories that other people flinch away from. She writes with surgical precision and a deep moral rage — never exploitative, always purposeful.

Her credits include Ma Prison (2025) screened at Birmingham Film Festival, Best LGBT Screenplay (Chicago Script Awards), Best Thriller (Hollywood's Monthly Film Festival), and script reader for the BBC Writersroom.

She makes the films that need to exist.

    Synopsis

Zoe is on a night out with friends when a charming stranger begins showering her with drinks, attention, and generosity. It feels easy. It feels like kindness.

    It isn't.

Self Scan is a visceral, unflinching film about the moment that changes everything — and the silence that follows. Shot with minimal dialogue and maximum tension, it builds with quiet dread toward an ending that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Setting: Nightclub → Street → Domestic interior

Cast: Zoe (20sF), Matt (30sM), supporting friends + nightclub atmosphere

    Shoot: 3 days

    Director's Statement

"It's sad to say that many people will be able to empathise with this story. This happens far too often and it shouldn't be normalised. The lack of regard over this issue baffles and disgusts me. A person's body is not payment. Kindness is kindness and shouldn't cost anything. Even just the suggestion of it — this isn't a casual transaction, it's assault and should be treated as such.

A friend of mine was raped on a night out. The offender was prosecuted, but not convicted, because my friend 'supposedly' gave consent. My friend was intoxicated. They had no memory of giving consent. They were traumatised and emotionally scarred from the incident, and now they have to live with it for the rest of their lives, while the offender gets to walk free.

This case was never brought to justice. It pains me to know that thousands of similar cases won't be either. I'm hoping this film will reach people suffering under similar conditions. I want to bring the community together, letting them know they are not alone."
